It was yet another typical weekday evening on 10th Oct 2017 for most people. However for the over 180 guests who turned up at Bras Basah, it was certainly an evening to remember. Faculty, alumni, students, staff, industry and university partners were invited for the celebration of MITB’s 10th Anniversary with a Gala Dinner at the Rendezvous Hotel.
As the cocktail session commenced, guests trickled in and had fun mingling and taking photos with one another - especially so for our alumni from the early batches as they reminisce their mugging days with bouts of laughter as well as catching up with their Profs whom they have not seen for awhile.
With encouragement from the host, the dinner kicked off to a rousing start with an icebreaking game. Between introductions within the tables, teams have to build ‘tall structures’ using just marshmallows and raw spaghetti strands. It was certainly not an easy task as everyone pitched in their best efforts while groans of dismay echoed when the occasional tower of pasta crumbled.
Amidst the reunion and celebration, we initiated a charity drive during the occasion. A silent and live auction were held and items such as wine and paintings kindly donated by faculty and staff were displayed at the foyer and were up for bids. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Children’s Cancer Foundation.
We are honored to have the participation of senior executives from the following organisations: Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung (GFK), SAS, Citibank, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC), DBS Bank, BNP Paribas, NCS, US Commercial Services, TNF Ventures and Liberty Insurance. On top of that, our university partners from University of Electronic Science & Technology from China (UESTC), Southwestern University of Finance & Economics (SWUFE) as well as Xiamen University (XMU) flew in to grace our event.
In his Welcome Remarks, SMU Vice Provost (Research) Prof. Steven Miller shared with the audience the beginnings of MITB, the contributions of key faculty members, how MITB transformed itself throughout the 10 years to stay relevant to the industry. Prof. Miller also gave his well-wishes to MITB for all her future endeavors.
Food, wine and conversation flowed incessantly as the evening wore on. Dinner guests posed with their best expressions while the photographer navigated the grounds to capture memorable table shots. Mini-games and lucky draws were held with participants getting up on stage with antics and performances greeted with raucous applause and laughter.
School of Information Systems (SIS) Dean, Prof. Pang Hwee Hwa presented prizes to the top 3 winners of the final lucky draw segment. The top prize - A deluxe weekend stay at the Rendezvous Hotel!
In her closing speech, Associate Dean for SIS Post-Graduate Professional Education, Associate Prof. Michelle Cheong thanked the representatives from the US Embassy, colleagues from XMU, UESTC, SWUFE, industry partners that sponsored internships, scholarships, curriculum development and alumni that remembered MITB throughout the years. Prof. Cheong also thanked everyone for their generous donations on behalf of the Children’s Cancer Foundation.
The dinner concluded with a cake cutting ceremony by senior management. It was indeed a joyous and memorable event, marking a decade of success and excellence for us. We sincerely thank all dinner participants for their attendance and contributions to the MITB programme.
